Veterans Affairs officials are rejecting calls to remove gravestones bearing Nazi swastikas at a pair of federal veterans cemeteries, saying they have a duty to preserve the historic markers. Two Americans and a Canadian are suspected of planning to incite violence at a Virginia gun rights rally. Both were used to inter dozens of unclaimed remains of enemy troops following World War II. Veteran Affairs officials in a statement said the headstones date back to the s. Army officials oversaw both cemeteries at the time and approved the inscriptions and inclusion of the swastika. Although Displaced Persons DPs made crucial contributions to the organization and operation of the International Tracing Service in its early years, their work in the ITS has not been analyzed in any depth. After the Second World War, millions of persons were missing, with relatives, friends and the governments of their home countries searching for them. Knowledge about the crimes committed by the Nazis was still fragmentary.
Against this background, a new type of archive emerged that broke with established archival principles: collections archives were created for specific purposes in the period following – the search for victims and survivors of Nazi persecution, the criminal prosecution of perpetrators or remembrance of the crimes which were committed.
This paper uses the history of the Arolsen Archives to examine two issues which, while being relevant to archives in general, were and are particularly important for collections archives. The first of these issues is the collection and organization of documents. The second issue concerns independent research and questions of access to the holdings of collections archives. The intention of this chapter is not only to help readers understand the history of the Arolsen Archives and the structure and usability of their collections, but also to begin to identify the peculiarities and challenges which are particular to this new type of collections archives.
This chapter aims mainly to provide an overview of the early history of the search for victims of Nazi persecution from to the early s though an outlook regarding later developments will also be provided. The focus will be on the organizational framework of tracing and documenting based on historical precedents while also looking at the use of different methods that were devised by the Allies for the sake of clarifying individual fates of Nazi victims during this time.
These have, to date, received little attention from historians. Prior family tracing and search activities laid the groundwork for its extensive networking efforts in the Second World War era with US relatives of refugees in Europe who required assistance and survivors searching for their families.

Women are becoming increasingly outspoken as a debate on female roles in the radical right takes shape. In the late s, in the heyday of radical left-wing groups, a debate developed within the Weathermen about the role of revolutionary women, who had been largely confined to supporting their menfolk. Before it was over, the Weathermen were renamed the Weather Underground, and many of the group’s women were taking up the gun.
And while they are far from radical feminists, many are espousing a new female activism and even leadership — often to the dismay and anger of the men in their movement. Everyone is starting to realize that if we are going to overcome in this struggle we are going to have to do it together — Man and Woman — side by side!
From California to Maryland, and abroad from Australia to Canada to Europe, the voices of “racialist” women are being heard increasingly in a variety of forums. In the past, these movement women have been Nazi “Aryan breeders,” the Klan moms who stayed home sewing robes for their men, the secretaries and helpmates of neo-Nazi leaders, the transmitters of “Aryan” values to the next generation.
Now, some of these women are seeking new, expanded roles for themselves and their gender. And although most reject “feminism” — which is widely seen as a Jewish plot to destroy the white race — they are leading key efforts to build a viable movement.
