You will read in many places that no serial number lists exist prior to the fire at the Schwinn factory in August of This is not exactly true. Enough bikes have positively been dated by records such as invoices, build sheets, dealer ledgers, and dated photographs that a decent idea of serial number ranges can at least get us in the ball park. Other things such as how the bike was equipped and who sold it can also provide clues to when the bike was built. Before using this information make sure you have a Schwinn. Also keep in mind a serial number will not tell you what model, options, colors or any other specific information like an automobile vehicle identification number VIN will. There are also no breakouts on exact production figures of models.

With the increasing interest in collecting vintage road bicycles is a growing interest in authenticating and documenting individual bicycles. Waterford acquired a collection of Schwinn Paramount production which can help with this process. The records, which start in through , show varying levels of information about individual frame orders. A few years ago, Waterford introduced an authentication service which we call the Provenance Report.
When ordering a Provenance Report, you provide Waterford what you know about your Paramount. We require the serial number and ideally the size and color. We then locate any information we have on your bike based on the serial number. For most bikes, this information includes the original dealer to whom the bike was sold, the model, size, color and approximate production dates. The quality of record-keeping varied considerably over the 30 years covered by our records, with a few gaps where no records exist in the period.

The Chicago Schwinns were among the most bomb-resistant bikes ever built, and they were built with unique technology. The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible.
There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Marc S. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article: Inside the Varsity , which is now on this site.

What are we looking at? The steel frame is made from Reynolds tubing, brazed into fairly typical racing bike geometry. The seat tube is laid-back at a shallow angle, giving the rider good leverage to muscle around a heavy gear. This is a medium to large bike, and the size seems odd. In this era seatposts were not intended to extend very far beyond the frame, likewise the handlebar stem is just a few inches above the top tube.
The saddle is a Brooks, handmade in England. Campagnolo furnishes some of the equipment of course with their hubs, shifters, and Gran Sport derailleurs managing the ten gear choices. There is a close-ratio Stronglight Crankset on the bike, a sensible choice for flat roads, not requiring the front derailleur to perform heroics lifting the chain over a wide gear spread. The svelte little sidepull brakes are GB Coureur Plus models.

His father, the owner of a prosperous small organ and piano factory, died when Ignaz Schwinn was eleven years old, leaving a family of seven children of whom Ignaz Schwinn was next to the eldest.
