We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard! Love them all! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set.
I do it a bit differently than it has been done in math classes previously. They each work on individual whiteboards, but talk together while working. I walk around and answer questions while they work. After we finish each problem, one person at each table rotates to the next table. The same people move all period.
For her trigonometry class, Sarah Hagan (center) uses everything but TURNER: Math speed-dating – she hands the students slips of paper.
Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style. We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this. First, I created an overview sheet that explained the concept to my students and included a graphic organizer for them to fill out to give them some accountability.
Prep over. I set up my classroom to have a circle of desks. It just made more logistical sense in my classroom. Set up the desks and then divide your class into two groups, one that stays sitting and one that rotates.
